2010 US Figure Skating Championships Winners, Results and Updates – Rachael Flatt won the 2010 Women’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday. Rachael Flatt performed brilliantly in her routine in the long program of the 2010 Women’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships and ended up just edging out a victory on Saturday night.
Coming into the long program at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Championships, Mirai Nagasu led the field with a first night score of 70.06. Sitting in second place was Sasha Cohen with a score of 69.93, and in third place was Rachael Flatt with a score of 69.35. It all meant that the final day of the competition would decide which lady was going to win the gold medal at the 2010 U.S.
Women’s Figure Skating Championships, and with it most likely earn a spot at the 2010 Winter Olympics. With only two spots on the United States 2010 Winter Olympics team, it put the pressure on every woman to perform to the best of their abilities on Saturday. The ultimate decision on which two skaters are selected will be later on Saturday night.
Earlier in the night, Sasha Cohen fell during her performance on a triple flip, ending with an overall score of 174.28 and bringing an end to her chances at gold. Ashley Wagner came through with an amazing performance while sitting in fourth place, and was very aggressive during her long program.
She ended up doing quite well, and ended with a very strong score of 184.72. When Cohen fell in her performance, it meant that Wagner would be in the medals. That left just Flatt and Nagasu to decide the winner.
At the conclusion of her skate, which left the crowd on its feet and Wagner with 184.70 points, Wagner briefly held that coveted second U.S. women’s skating spot for the Vancouver 2010 Games.
She had already slam-dunked Sasha Cohen, the 25-year-old returning veteran who did the splits — not in a good way — on a botched triple flip jump, then stumbled on others and dropped from second place to fourth overall, with 174.28 points.
Cohen, Flatt and Nagasu had entered Saturday’s competition with less than a full point separating them. Wagner trailed by about seven points. But her skating history is replete with strong free-skate performances, including a spectacular free skate at last year’s nationals, which vaulted her from 12th place to fourth. Wagner was confident she could make up the difference again this time.
