Amazon, the largest online retailer in the world, is put into spotlight once again as a lot of Amazon shoppers noticed last Friday that all Macmillan books where pulled out in its online bookshelves at Amazon.com

It all started from Science fiction author John Scalzi, whose books are carried by Macmillan, when he tweeted that his books are gone from both Amazon’s book and Kindle sections. However, he did not get any explanation why. Scalzi tweeted: “Folks noticing Amazon not directly carrying my books: It seems many books are affected which makes me suspect a glitch.”

A lot of book shoppers at Amazon asked what’s the real reason behind the pull out of Amazon in its e-books for sale at Amazon.com. Sources familar with the situation say that there was a disagreement between Amazon and Macmillan over the price of e-books. Accordingly, Macmillan, one of the largest publishers of books in the Unites asked Amazon to raise its ebook prices from $9.99 to around $15.

To Amazon’s dismay, Amazon pulled out all Macmillan books in its Amazon.com site which triggered a curiousity among frequent Amazon online book shoppers.

Recently, Macmillan is one of Apple’s announced partners for the Apple iPad Tablet PC as part of its new iBookstore carrying imprints such as Farrar, Straus & Giroux, St. Martins Press and Henry Holt. Will this news bring a lot of profits to Apple since book lovers may just buy books from iBookstore and not from Amazon? What will happen to Amazon’s Kindle then?

This is not a good news for us, the readers. We would like to have more options to choose from, instead of being locked by certain store for certain products. I’d like to gift a book, for example the incredible book ‘Somewhere carnal over 40 winks’, to someone without worrying about if the store has that specific book or not.

I think this is a dumb move on Amazon’s part. It also shows weakness.
