With the recent announcement of the Apple iPad that has a 9.7″ IPS Screen, a lot of gadget fanatics are now searching for IPS Screen. What does it mean to have a tablet or a laptop that has IPS Screen? What is an IPS Monitor? What differentiates an IPS LCD Display from the normal LCD monitors out there?

IPS Display is a short word for In-plane switching display. According to Wikipedia, In-plane switching or IPS is:

A Type of LCD technology which aligns the liquid crystal cells in a horizontal direction. In this method, the electrical field is applied through each end of the crystal, but this requires two transistors for each pixel instead of the single transistor needed for a standard thin-film transistor (TFT) display. This results in blocking more transmission area, thus requiring a brighter backlight, which will consume more power, making this type of display less desirable for notebook computers.

This IPS Screen Display will eat much of the new Apple iPad Tablet PC’s battery. However, this type of screen favors professional graphic artists the most as it provides more viewing angles to the user.

In one example cited, consider owning a gadget using the IPS Screen technology, say a mobile phone. Most older LCD screens on cell phones have 35-degree viewing angles which doesn’t allow you to sneak a peek at the sports scores or TV show clips that the guy sitting next to you on the subway is watching on his handset. With IPS technology in that phone, you won’t have to strain your neck quite so much.

Time for a really long post. I know a lot of people are curious so I will explain what you can invest in.

    TV – Get IPS
    PC – Get LED

IPS – These are bright screens, quite similar to LED monitors. They have a fantastic viewing angle which is perfect for a TV. If you’re getting one just for your computer, you might want to think twice. The article says graphics designers want them and that is a misnomer. The screen does not offer sharper or higher quality images anymore than LED monitors do (Or simply TFT screens). They do tend to come in 120Hz flavors, but keep in mind that games and movies are not 120Hz. It can be very annoying to watch 24Hz or 60Hz on a 120Hz display. Most people will have that mode turned off unless they’re watching an 1080p broadcast (progressive scan for sports, not interlaced like blueray) These screens are for enthusiasts or for your perfect entertainment center.

LED – This type of monitor is lit up by an array of LEDs. Still being a TFT it doesn’t have the big viewing angle, but I might say the TFT has improved enough where you don’t even notice that anymore. They take up as little as 4 watts on saver mode, but as high as 45 on full power. My old Samsung 226bw CCFL took up a whopping 300 watts. Asus put out a nice model called the VE278Q. It is a 27 inch monitor that acts like your 1080 resolution 24 inch screen and keeps things nice and clear. It has the most beautiful picture of any LED screen I have seen yet and beat out Apple’s 27 inch screen for a lot less money. Don’t you love competition?

In conclusion, I must say that I am glad to finally see LCD screen prices go down so much that if one breaks, one wouldn’t care to repair it, but simply buy another without worrying about what to get next and how much it will cost. 350 for a 27 inch LED monitor sounds like a steal, but that’s what it all comes down to. Thanks to the introduction of the IPS, we can now all afford a good LED screen.

The best news in LCDs is that as popularity and common use has escalated, the prices have begun to come down a bit.
