The invention of the Internet has led to many different ways to connect with people around the world. This has even impacted the world of dating and relationships, with various online dating services, video chat, and social networks. More than ever, people are able to maintain long-distance relationships via the Internet and even meet potential dates. Here are some of the top movies that reflect the wonders of online dating.
1. You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Before the advent of online dating sites, there was email dating. In this romantic comedy, two individuals meet online and discuss their dreams, trials and tribulations, and hopes for the future via email without revealing any details about themselves. Little do they know, they are both competitors in the same industry. Kathleen (portrayed by Meg Ryan) owns an independent little bookstore while Joe Fox (played by Tom Hanks) opens up an over sized franchise bookstore, driving her slowly out of business.
2. Eurotrip (2004)
In this hilarious comedy, Scott Thomas (played by Scott Mechlowicz) has just graduated from high school and plans on leaving for med school in the fall. But on graduation day, his slutty girlfriend Fiona dumps him, leaving him hurt and scarred. He turns to his online buddy Mike from Berlin, who begins to make a pass at him with the news he is newly broken up. Scott blocks Mike, wishing never to speak to him again–until he realizes Mike is actually Mieke, a gorgeous German girl. Believing he and Mieke are meant to be together, he and a friend travel to Europe to find her, and run into many misadventures along the way.
3. Must Love Dogs (2005)
This romantic comedy stars Diane Lane as Sarah Nolan, a recently divorced preschool teacher, whose family has taken on the task of finding her a date. When several of her dates turn out to be major flops, her sister signs her up for an online dating service, PerfectMatch.com, and includes “must love dogs” in the description, though Sarah doesn’t own a dog herself. She borrows her brother’s dog and meets Jake (played by John Cusack), who turns out to be borrowing a dog himself.
4. The Holiday (2006)
Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet star in this romantic comedy, which follows the two women as they deal with relationship woes. Both at a rough spot in their lives, through an online housing swap program they switch homes for two-week period over Christmas. Diaz moves to Winslet’s home in Surrey, England, where she meets Winslet’s handsome book editor brother, played by Jude Law. Meanwhile Winslet settles into Diaz’s Hollywood mansion and falls for her movie composer neighbor, played by Jack Black. Though not necessarily a movie about online dating, it is a film about fate and finding love unexpectedly because of the housing swap program used through the Internet.
Online dating has made a huge cultural impact on our society, and has become a normal part of our everyday lives. It is no wonder that movies were made, and will continue to be made, about the wonders it can do for our dating lives, even if we’re thousands of miles apart.
