Wolf Moon Tonight Updates: What is a Wolf Moon: Wolf Moon 2010 – Tonight, January 29, 2010, is what the experts call a wolf moon or for us common folks, the biggest full moon of the year. If you have clear skys and want to truly appreciate the wolf moon, I suggest you get outside of the city lights so you can really see just how enormous and bright it will look. It’s pretty incredible.
Spaceweather.com further explains: “The moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a circle but an ellipse, with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other. Astronomers call the point of closest approach ‘perigree,’ and that is where the moon will be Friday night through Saturday morning.
In case you think tonight’s wolf moon is no big deal, let me share a few stats. It’s apparently 14% wider AND 30% brighter than a full moon you would view in August. That’s a pretty significant difference.
So why is it called a wolf moon? It’s actually one of the Native American names given to different moons. I, of course, being the Twilight fan that I embarrassingly am, assumed it was in reference to warewolves.
The biggest, brightest full moon of the year happens tonight. Tonight’s full moon also happens to be the first of the year, an event known as the wolf moon. If you’ve got clear skies, celebrate by snatching your three wolf moon shirt from the closet and check out this celestial beauty.
